City Council to consider referring bill to voters that would amend City Charter and create Department of Peacekeeping Services

According to Denverite, “Denver City Councilwoman Candi CdeBaca has filed a bill that, if approved by a majority of her fellow legislators, will ask voters in November to replace the city’s police department with a “peace force” focused on preventing crime and reducing violence without using force.”

You can read the full text of the amendment here: https://wp-denverite.s3.amazonaws.com/wp-content/uploads/sites/4/2020/08/Peacekeeping-Office.pdf (opens PDF).

Councilwoman Sawyer created a survey for feedback for her district (https://www.surveymonkey.com/r/d5Charter2020). If you would like to share feedback and you do not live in Councilwoman Sawyer’s District, you can use the option “other” as where you live.

The bill is scheduled to be discussed during Monday’s city council meeting, on August 17th.

The meeting begins at 5 p.m., with General Public Comment Session.

It can be accessed, via Zoom.
